Scammers are sending around fake E-Z Pass texts claiming you owe unpaid tolls and seeking immediate payment.
The fraudulent text messages, a new “smishing” scam that’s gone out to residents of New Jersey and other states, targets E-Z Pass holders. These messages claim to be from E-Z Pass and attempt to trick customers into clicking malicious links, asking for payment information.
According to Amy Anthony, director of the Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles, E-Z Pass doesn’t text you for payment. Ever.
“Phishing scams are designed to create a sense of panic, catching the receiver off guard and causing them to react before thinking,” Anthony said. “I urge everyone to think before you click on links of any kind especially those requesting money, payment, personal information, credit card details, Social Security number, or anything else that could be used negatively.”
Scammers have targeted E-Z Pass users in multiple states with an authentic-looking text message that looks like it’s from the E-Z Pass toll system. The messages claim that you owe money for tolls and should pay immediately.
These messages, which often request small amounts, ask customers to click on a link to make the payment.
The small amount that you allegedly owe helps makes the scam more effective. It’s so minor that most people wouldn’t question it and people are also anxious about racking up late fees.
But the scammers are ultimately after your identity.
The official-looking link is fake and will direct you to a site where scammers will pull down your personal and financial information.
What you should not do is click the link; simply delete it. Warn your friends and family to do the same if they receive one.
If you feel that you might owe money to E-Z Pass, use your normal process for checking your account.
If you were scammed, call your bank and credit card companies to freeze or monitor your accounts.
