Over the past few days, several people in the canton of Lucerne have received fraudulent text messages purporting to be from the Lucerne police. The messages claim that there is an outstanding fine with a payment deadline that will soon expire. The police issued a warning: this is a fake.
The text messages contain a link to a supposed police online portal where those affected are supposed to pay the fine. However, anyone who clicks on the link risks disclosing personal or financial data to criminals.
The Lucerne police say that they do not send fine demands by SMS or text message. Recipients of such messages should not open the link, delete the message immediately and block the sender. Anyone who has already provided data or transferred money should contact their bank immediately and report the matter to the police.
