But what if the internet was not developed at all? Then what would have been the world today? No TikTok, no WhatsApp, no dating sites, no youtube, no Pub G, and million other apps would not be here. Could you live your life happily without these apps? What else would have been gone? Amazon and other e-commerce sites, cashless options from phones, internet banking services, online investment, and cryptocurrency would not exist. Would you be living happily if you were unable to pay through your phone or invest in Bitcoin?
What else? Thousands of IT companies-Deloitte, cognizant, Meta, Google, but hey Netflix would be there but only renting DVDs. The whole mushroom jungle of digital marketing would have been gone. And you might have been missing social media influencers very badly. Some other important things would also have been gone like Wikipedia or several other educational sites, learning platforms or awareness and news sites etc. Now how much impact would have been there on your life with these things gone? would the world be the same if we did not have access to these things?
To understand the need for the internet we first need to set the objective of the internet. What is the primary objective of the Internet? — dissemination of information at higher speed by connecting computers through various methods. Internet was developed first in the 1960s when the United States Department of Defense’s Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) funded the development of a network called ARPANET. It created various paths to connect computers decentralizing communication systems.
However, even if ARPANET was not developed the inception of the Internet would have been inevitable. Since the computer was being developed exponentially sooner or later someone somewhere would find a way to connect computers and set up communication among computers. But was that necessary for modern human civilization to set up communication between computers and have the internet on every electronic device? Now get back to the question of the dissemination of information instantly for which the internet was used primarily.
Would we have been disconnected or less informed or slow informed if the internet was not on our phones or our computers? No. the answer is no. We have better and more efficient communication technologies than the Internet to fill teh gaps in communication and information. Sattelite technology is far better for connecting devices even remotely located with more effective than the internet. It is unfortunate only that we have not developed it extensively to make it more accessible. Starlink could be one significant effort in this direction.
If we keep aside smart TVs we still use satellite networks to watch TV. Another way of communication that the Internet even now could not have replaced is cellular networks. Almost everywhere people still use cellular networks to call someone which is more efficient than the Internet. We could send SMS or MMS using cellular technology at quite a fast speed. So if the internet was not there we would still be watching TV channels from all over the globe and still be connected to our friends and colleagues easily. I agree that we might not be having video calls without the internet.
Now if we have successfully countered the primary objective of the internet then other internet dependencies are just a myth and market created. You have already heard multiple times that necessity is the mother of invention.
Now what was the necessity behind the innovation of Facebook and other social media apps? Wouldn’t you have friends if Facebook or insta or snap was not there in your life? Now ten steps further meta is creating a virtual world where people can enjoy living a whole virtual. Who on earth has ever asked for that? There is no necessity behind the inception of this virtual reality but if it is deployed successfully necessity, urge and FOMO would be created thereafter. Sooner we will be addicted to this VR and we would think of it as a part of our lives.
In my opinion, the internet is a mere distraction for human civilization. It keeps humans away from engaging in productive activities essential for the growth of humankind. At this point, many would blame social media sites, porn sites, games apps or Netflix or Youtube but these are entertainment that we need as humans however the abundance of these things is an issue but what causes much harm is the industry developed around the internet.
App development, social media management, social media influencers, people making reaction videos (those are the worst), web development, digital marketing and even the whole IT industry is merely a distraction for humankind forcing a great number of human resources to make apps, and websites or serving them. What we as humans could achieve in the context of a grand civilization that is known to be alone in this whole universe and has gone through several transformations to get here.
We as humankind are destined to achieve more extraordinary milestones instead of making faces as a reaction over some footage or creating apps for virtual girlfriends. Humankind has been wasting its resources and minds to serve some apps that can create a mosquito repelling noise. Even Mircosoft, tweeter, Facebook, millions of software and all AI tools are useless in the grand context of the growth of human civilization.
Now what if the internet was not there at all? What could be the impact on Earth? We as humans would be doing jobs in more productive industries such as space, manufacturing, building, and creating some physical not virtual marvels. If the internet was not there we could have possibly solved the mystery of the unification of gravity and quantum forces and obtained the theory of everything.
We would have many more scientists working on Mars missions and planning to make humans interstellar. All the smart people spared from the IT and internet industry would have been used to solve complex physics and maths problems. Social media influencers could help on the ground making real differences. Many resources would have been available to conduct research for the development of medicines for cancer and diabetes. All these things we may achieve in the near future but most of the things would have been achieved already if humankind had not wasted its resources to increase the ranking of any stupid website on Google.
