SAN ANTONIO — You may have recently received an email or text about a shipment being delayed or couldn’t be delivered, asking you to “click here” to confirm information.
“It’s getting tough to decipher, what’s legit and what’s not,” says Jason Meza, BBB San Antonio Spokesperson.
The BBB says the messages can be confusing.  You could be waiting for a FedEx, UPS or Amazon delivery, then you could get a generic email or text asking for information.
“You could be confirming a credit card number, and so that gets compromised. There are several different angles it can take, but it’s the usually the inbound unsolicited text or emails that say there’s a delivery waiting for you.  Let’s get this going. Click here. Those a dangerous,” says Meza.
The BBB says when you place an order, keep the original email or text from the purchase.
“That’s the piece of data you have to follow, and don’t ever deviate from that tracking link or tracking number, because if you do that’s the danger your playing with,” says Meza.
Scammers will also try and text you.
“They’re called smishing messages, like phishing but instead it’s SMS text messages. Smishing messages are designed to have you read, reroute or divert a package you’re waiting for to a scammer,” says Meza.
The BBB recommends you create an account with the shippers, where you can monitor alerts and preferences. They also say report any suspicious activity to the shipper and law enforcement.
The BBB says they are seeing an increase in the 18 to 24 year old age group being scammed, because they are so trusting of technology, swiping, adding and don’t read the fine print.
