WhatsApp could soon make it easier to send text messages without typing. A new voice-to-text feature may let you simply speak your message, with the app converting your speech into editable text. The best part is that the processing happens offline using a locally downloaded language pack, meaning your message won’t need to be sent to WhatsApp’s servers. The feature is currently in development and doesn’t have a release timeline.
As spotted by Wabetainfo, WhatsApp is developing a voice-to-text tool that will let users speak their message and send it as regular text. The feature was spotted in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.37.8, although it is not currently available to beta testers. However, the publication could obtain some details about the new feature, which is essentially a built-in dictation tool.
According to the report, WhatsApp plans to add a dedicated button inside the chat bar for this tool. Tapping it will put the app into a listening mode, allowing users to speak their message. WhatsApp will use a downloaded language pack and convert the speech into text. Once done, users can review it (and edit it) and tap the send button. The recipient will receive a normal text message rather than a voice recording.

This is different from WhatsApp’s existing voice message transcription feature. Transcription allows you to convert received voice messages into text so you can read them. The new feature works in the opposite direction, converting your own speech into text before you send it. The feature will reportedly work in individual chats, groups, and channels. Users can also cancel the recording before sending the message.
Since the voice processing will reportedly happen locally on the device, this feature may only support a select few languages in the beginning. More details should emerge in the coming months as WhatsApp continues to work on it.
