Motorists are warned not to click links or scan QR codes in SMS messages claiming they have unpaid traffic fines. The messages are a scam aimed at stealing personal and financial information.
Deputy government spokeswoman Ploythalay Laksameesaengjan said on Sunday that fraudsters were sending fake SMS messages claiming to be from the Royal Thai Police, often   claiming recipients had outstanding e-ticket fines and directing them to a website via a shortened link.
The links lead to fake websites designed to resemble the official traffic-ticket system. The sites may display details such as ticket numbers, vehicle registration numbers, alleged offences and fine amounts, making them appear credible, before asking victims to enter personal information and credit or debit card details.
Ms Ploythalay stressed that the RTP does not request payment of traffic fines through SMS messages containing links or QR codes.
She urged the public not to click links, scan QR codes or provide personal or financial information, especially when messages pressure recipients to make immediate payments or threaten legal action for non-compliance.
Motorists could verify and pay outstanding traffic fines only through official channels – the government’s Thang Rath app, the Police Care app, and the Police Ticket Management (PTM) system at ptm.police.go.th/eTicket.
