Texting your customers in 2026 is no longer optional.
From eCommerce businesses to restaurants to enterprise tech companies, the rise of text SMS marketing as a crucial channel in customer communications strategies is being well-documented.
The old vanguards of customer communication – email marketing, phone systems, social media, etc – still play an important role in creating omnichannel conversations with prospects and customers. But texting has emerged as the exciting new frontier in this space.
What does that mean for businesses? Simple. Texting customers should be viewed as a top priority in the customer communications strategy. Sellers and customer success professionals should be equipped with the tools and processes needed to rapidly respond to customer inquiries via text. And marketers should be granted license to add text messaging as a channel for their marketing outreach.
I’ve spent the last 6 years in the UCaaS and business texting spaces, and have seen firsthand the power of texting to dramatically enhance pipeline conversion, customer retention, and overall brand perception.
The companies that aggressively lean into text message marketing will have an unfair advantage in 2026 and beyond. So it’s important to understand what tools are available to them and how they can fit into your overall stack.
SMS marketing is the practice of using SMS as a channel to conduct mass and 1:1 outreach to prospects and customers via text. Instead of reaching them through their email inbox, chat, social, or a phone call, SMS marketing gives businesses the ability to reach customers where they’re most likely to see the message: their text inbox.
The statistics on SMS marketing are insane. 98% of texts get read and 90% of them get read within 3 minutes. Contrast that with email open rates (20%) and you see just how powerful SMS can be as a channel for your business.
SMS marketing has benefited greatly from advances in technology that have reduced the cost of mass outreach and enabled businesses to sync their SMS strategies and analytics within their broader processes and data systems.
Most SMS platforms now integrate with CRMs and eCommerce tools, feature live reporting on how texts are performing, and empower businesses to send thousands of texts at once for less than $50. That means higher ROI, tighter synchronization with processes, and smoother operations.
There are now dozens of SMS marketing tools available to businesses looking to leverage text message marketing in 2026. Each comes with their own unique use cases, price points, benefits, and drawbacks. The goal of this article is to demystify those distinct capabilities and give you an idea of which tools you should consider adopting to leverage SMS marketing for your business.
Rankings were determined by a number of factors. These are all tools that I have firsthand experience with, either as an advisor (Textla, where I’m currently a paid growth advisor, Nextiva), user (SendBlue, Textla, Twilio, Nextiva), or as an industry community member (PostScript, Attentive, SlickText). The rankings are fairly loose, as different platforms will have more utility for businesses than others depending on use case and need. Broadly speaking, I would characterize them as follows: Textla is best for North American SMBs, SendBlue is best for B2B businesses, Attentive is best for eCommerce businesses who need an all-in-one email and SMS marketing tool, PostScript wins for eCommerce businesses looking for SMS only, Twilio excels for developers, SlickText wins for midmarket B2C companies, and Nextiva is best for businesses who need an all-in-one VoIP and SMS platform.
Textla is the best SMS marketing tool for SMBs looking to send texts to the US and Canada. Founded in 2023, the platform offers the best bang-for-your-buck in the industry, starting at just $19/month for platform access and a penny-per-text.
In terms of pure speed-to-value, Textla wins. The platform gives you a free phone number immediately upon signup. Once you get verified, you have the ability to start texting immediately. Textla gives users the ability to upload contacts and launch SMS and MMS marketing campaigns to their customers in a matter of seconds. The platform is reminiscent of Mailchimp for SMS in its design. It allows you to send bulk texts, two-way text, set up keywords, and get detailed analytics on campaign performance.
Textla also has a Zapier integration, allowing for syncs with your CRM and other marketing tools. For pure affordability and ease-of-use, Textla is a great solution for North American small businesses in need of SMS marketing.
SendBlue is a powerful two-way texting platform that lets you send iMessages to your customers from a seamless interface. The power of having blue bubbles appear from your business texting number is hard to overstate. Reply rates are higher. Trust is improved. And your team members will love the intuitive interface.
SendBlue is great for B2B sales teams looking to optimize speed-to-lead with automated outbound texting. It also makes team texting super easy to do and integrates snugly with any CRM you might be using.
Attentive is a strong choice for eCommerce businesses looking to add SMS to their arsenal. They dominate the space and empower businesses to use a single platform to do both SMS and email outreach to their customers.
Attentive has a direct integration with Shopify and other major eCommerce tools, enabling businesses to send timely Abandoned Cart reminders and promotions while customers are browsing your website.
With thousands of major customers, ranging from Kodiak to the Indiana Pacers, Attentive has immense capabilities (including RCS) and the ability to provide detailed analytics about campaign performance. It’s not cheap, but it’s worth it.
A well-known player in the SMS space, PostScript is used by Heart and Soil, Ruggable, and a host of other eCommerce brands on Shopify looking to make SMS their #1 revenue channel.
As a pure eCommerce texting solution, PostScript offers everything you need to launch successful texting campaigns, including cutting-edge functionality like RCS, which allows for slick branding inside of your texting campaigns. They also beat Attentive when it comes to affordability, though they lack some of the more powerful tools that Attentive has in terms of omni-channel communication.
For Shopify users on a budget, PostScript is a great SMS marketing solution.
Twilio is the developer’s choice in SMS marketing software. Every text you receive from Uber, AirBnB, and other tech platforms comes from Twilio, making it the de facto leader in the space. If you have developer resources available to you, Twilio is your go-to.
In addition to being the most customizable, developer-friendly SMS platform, Twilio offers great pricing at $0.0079 per text, making it among the cheapest SMS marketing tools on the market.
The company also offers a bevy of resources for customers looking to better understand how to use the platform.
SlickText is one of the most established SMS marketing software tools in the industry, having been around since 2012. The platform primarily serves SMBs and offers a higher degree of functionality than Textla, though it’s also more expensive and less intuitive, therefore better suited for experienced marketers with a higher budget to lean on.
The added features of SlickText (pop-ups, custom opt-ins, etc) are highly useful for companies looking to build their lists quickly and effectively, making it a great tool for companies with a high volume of existing web traffic.
All in all, you can’t go wrong using SlickText as your SMS marketing platform of choice. It’s the veteran in the space for SMBs.
For companies who need an SMS marketing platform that also serves as a cloud phone system and AI receptionist, Nextiva is a stellar choice.
The company has hundreds of thousands of US customers, and is the largest privately-held company in Arizona. Known for exceptional customer support, Nextiva is a great tool that gives you the ability to handle voice and SMS communications with your customers in one place. The only drawback: you can only do 1:1 texting with customers right now.
With so many SMS marketing tools to choose from, it’s important to address a few commonly asked questions about the industry. Here are the main ones below.
Most SMS marketing tools offer pricing in one of two buckets: pay-per-text or volume-based pricing. Certain companies like Textla offer pay-per-text with a small subscription fee, while others like SlickText charge based on certain volume buckets. You’ll want to thoroughly review the pricing of each SMS marketing platform before you commit.
Every SMS marketing platform on this list allows you to send MMS messages, which are messages that include images, PDFs, audio, or video. Be forewarned – these texts do cost more.
Yes. It’s very important to watch your character count when sending text messages, as most SMS marketing software providers charge more for longer messages (this is a passed through cost from the carriers).
In most cases, no. Compliance on SMS marketing is very strict. You cannot send cold text messages to non-opted in recipients and you also must avoid SHAFT content (sex, hate, alcohol, firearms and tobacco). Be sure your use case is TCPA compliant before committing to SMS marketing.
Easy. Most SMS marketing platforms enable you to upload your contact list as a CSV or sync directly with your CRM or other database to import your contacts. They’ll also automatically add new contacts that opt-in either via integration or directly within the platform.
Most SMS marketing platforms will give you the option to choose between a toll-free number, local number, or short code. But be aware that local numbers can cost more and short codes can be extremely costly and take some time to acquire. Your business will also need to be verified at the carrier-level before you can start sending, though most platforms handle this for you upon signup.
Many of these SMS marketing tools offer free trials and product demos, so take full advantage of whatever try-before-you-buy opportunities are available.
I also highly recommend reading customer reviews on sites like G2 and Capterra before proceeding. These reviews can give you some insight into how the platforms actually perform and hear first-hand feedback from real users.
Additionally, it makes sense to create a full strategy before proceeding, complete with messaging, contact list, integrations, etc, so you know going into using the platform what you need and how to use it. This will dramatically reduce ramp time to ROI.
Winning the hearts and minds of customers is crucial for every single business. SMS marketing tools give you direct access to the communication channel that has the highest upside with your customer base and the fastest response times.
The technology to reach their customers is more affordable and more widely available than ever before. Just like email marketing ten years ago, text message marketing in 2026 presents a great opportunity for businesses to get in front of their customers and drive additional revenue.
Best of luck hunting for your SMS marketing platform and launching your SMS marketing program in 2026 and beyond!
