THE Durban Metro Police Service issued a stern warning to the public to be vigilant of fraudulent SMS messages containing a fake Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences (AARTO) website link.
The message instructs recipients to enter their vehicle registration number, after which it falsely claims that they have an outstanding infringement penalty.
Metro police spokesperson Colonel Boysie Zungu urged motorists not to open or click on the link, as it is a scam.

“The fraudulent website falsely states that the recipient owes money and offers a 50% discount if payment is made. Members of the public are advised that if they receive such an SMS and are unsure whether it is legitimate, they should verify their AARTO status before taking any action,” said Zungu.
The public are urged to contact the Road Traffic Infringement Agency National Call Centre on 0861 227 861, contact the Durban Metro Police Service AARTO Help Desk on 031 311 2861/2/3, or visit the official AARTO website at www.aarto.gov.za.
