The BBB is warning about scammers pretending to be employers targeting people who are looking for work.
The scams involve text messages offering a large amount of money by doing small tasks like liking and subscribing to videos.
The scammers will then ask for money in order “unlock” earnings. Once the money is sent, they’re never heard from again.
CEO of the Better Business Bureau, Julia Lewis advises people to use caution if unprompted job offers come to their phone.
Lewis says text message are becoming a more popular method for scammers as they tend to catch the receiver off-guard.
“You’re walking, you’re doing whatever it is you’re doing during your day and suddenly you have this unprompted text message telling you how great you are and how great your resume is and how much they want to pay you to do what is a very simple task–liking and subscribing to Youtube videos. Many people are already doing that regularly. So now suddenly they’re able to get paid for that and it seems very enticing to them”.
She say red flags to watch for include unsolicited messages, jobs that are offered without an interview, and compensation that seems too good to be true.
