Register before 1 July to ensure branded SMS messages to patients, such as appointment reminders and test results, are not disrupted.
This week’s In Practice also includes a callout for general practice registrars to consider applying for the Academic Post Program, and a final call for RACGP Awards nominations which close on Monday 1 June.

Register for SMS sender ID
From 1 July, unregistered sender IDs will be labelled as ‘Unverified’ and appear in single message threads. A reminder for GPs and practices to register as soon as possible, to be prepared for the SMS Sender ID Register so branded SMS messages to patients are not disrupted.

Announced late last year, the ID Register is a priority reform under the Federal Government’s Fighting Scams initiative, to provide new protections against SMS brand impersonation scams and help create safer communications channels across professions, including health, aged care, disability or other health-related providers that may use sender IDs to contact patients, families and carers.

More information is available on the Australian Communications and Media Authority website.

Academic Post Program applications
Applications for the 2027 AGPT Academic Post Program close on 6 July, and general practice registrars interested in research or teaching are encouraged to apply.

The Academic Post Program offers a funded, 12-month part-time opportunity to work with a university department of general practice – developing a research project, contributing to teaching, and building skills that support a career long-term.

Specialised posts are also available, including the AIDA Academic Post, the AJGP Editorial Academic Post and the PhD Academic Post. No research experience is required to apply.

Apply online and watch the registrar showcase.

Final call for nominations for RACGP Awards
RACGP Awards nominations are closing on Monday 1 June at 9.00 am (AEST).

Members are encouraged to nominate an inspiring GP, registrar, supervisor or educator for the 2026 awards – nominations demonstrate to a colleague their commitment to their patients, community and profession has not gone unnoticed.
