Institutions and experts have appealed to citizens to be careful of fraudulent messages sent via SMS, which could lead to victims of bank data theft.
For the second day in a row, on Tuesday, the police have called on people not to fall prey to messages that falsely present the name of the bank and not to click on the links presented or share personal information.
Cybersecurity expert Mentor Hoxhaj has also made the same call and said that when they receive such messages, citizens should contact their banks.
“Call the bank where those clients are and get information directly from the bank about all SMSs that request that they enter links and fill in their data via SMS. This means that this is one of the measures, and every SMS with a link should have, so to speak, critical thinking, so that the first step is always to think that it is a dangerous link, respectively, and then take other measures,” said Hoxhaj.
He emphasized that banks should also be more proactive and that institutions should also take steps to identify the people behind the fraud.
Hoxhaj also stressed the need for information campaigns.
“The best prevention is raising awareness among citizens. Awareness campaigns and informational programs have a positive impact on citizens understanding the risk. In any case where clicking on links and providing sensitive data is required, maximum caution should be exercised, especially when it comes to financial data,” he said.
On Tuesday, KOHA sent questions about the prevention of these cases and citizens’ complaints to the Central Bank of Kosovo, but there was no response.
E, the Regulatory Authority for Electronic and Postal Communications has appealed to citizens to report these cases, as well as to immediately delete the message, block and report the number.
Several commercial banks have also made such calls, which have clarified that banks never request information via SMS.
The similar fraud campaign also occurred two months ago, when a number of victims were reported.
