Android Headlines / Android Apps / Google Messages Working on Security Upgrade to Defend Android Phones From SMS Blasters
Google Messages may soon introduce a security feature designed to protect Android users from SMS Blasters. The under-development safety feature was spotted in a string-code uncovered during an APK teardown.
If you have ever been a victim of an SMS blaster, you know how frustrating it is, especially since there is often little you can do to stop it. However, a new report suggests that Google Messages, the default texting app on many Android phones, is preparing a new safety feature designed to protect users from SMS blasters. Evidence found in a recent beta version of the app suggests Google is developing a system to detect or block suspicious mass text messages.
A recent APK teardown of the Google Messages v20260306 beta suggests a new feature designed to shield users from SMS blasters is under development. A line of code referencing a feature called enable_sms_blaster_protection was discovered. While the tech giant has not officially announced the feature, the code strongly suggests Google is already testing it internally.
SMS blasters mimic legitimate mobile towers and trick nearby smartphones into connecting to them. In many cases, attackers force devices to downgrade to older 2G connections, which weakens the security protections. Once connected, the fake tower can send phishing texts directly to phones within its range. Attack groups sometimes move through busy areas carrying these transmitters in vehicles or backpacks. This allows them to distribute fraudulent messages at scale.
To shield themselves from SMS blasters, Google has previously advised Android users to disable 2G connectivity when possible. However, not every device or carrier allows that setting. This leaves some users exposed to SMS blaster tactics. By adding protection directly inside Google Messages, the company could create another layer of security that works regardless of network conditions.
For reference, the current version of Google Messages already carries an on-device security system that monitors and flags suspicious texts. It might soon get the new security feature, which will shield users from SMS blasters. However, keep in mind that an APK teardown doesn’t guarantee the arrival of the feature to the stable version.
