PIERCE COUNTY, Wash — On a quiet residential street on Washington’s Key Peninsula, investigators say a violent attack unfolded in less than an hour — leaving four women dead and the suspected attacker fatally shot by a Pierce County deputy.
A search warrant obtained by KING 5 now provides the clearest picture yet of what investigators say happened that morning, describing where victims were found, what evidence was recovered and what deputies encountered when they arrived.
At the same time, text messages shared with KING 5 by Anastasia Shablykina, one of the victim’s daughter and also the suspect’s sister, show the fear and confusion spreading through the family as they tried to understand what was happening in real time.
According to the warrant, the first sign of trouble came shortly before 9 a.m.
At 8:41 a.m., a 911 call reported a possible violation of a domestic violence protection order at the home of Zoya Shablykina.
By 8:53 a.m., a deputy learned that a court-ordered domestic violence protection order had been issued involving Zoya’s son, Aleksandr Shablykin, though the order had not yet been served.
Less than forty minutes later, the situation escalated.
At 9:30 a.m., another call reported that someone had been stabbed.
Just three minutes later — at 9:33 a.m. — a deputy radioed that shots had been fired.
When deputies arrived, investigators say they encountered what the search warrant describes as an active and violent scene.
The suspect, Aleksandr Shablykin, was found dead in the roadway near a Pierce County Sheriff’s patrol vehicle with a gunshot wound to the chest. Investigators say he was shot by a Pierce County deputy.
Across the street from where his body was found, detectives recovered a black-handled serrated knife covered in blood.
Nearby in the roadway behind a silver Toyota 4Runner, investigators discovered one of the victims, described in the warrant as an elderly woman with multiple stab wounds.
Directly across the street from the SUV, another victim lay covered with a white medical sheet, with blood visible beneath it.
A third victim was found in the backyard of the home, lying on her back with several stab wounds to her chest. A cell phone was found lying next to her body.
A fourth victim was transported to a nearby hospital but later died from her injuries.
Inside the home, investigators reported finding blood and blood spatter on the floors, doors and walls, evidence they say suggests the attack may have begun indoors before moving outside.
The warrant also notes a witness described the weapon used in the attack as possibly resembling an ice pick — a description investigators say does not match the serrated knife recovered in the street, raising the possibility that more than one weapon may have been used.
While investigators were piecing together the crime scene, messages between family members show a frantic effort to reach Zoya Shablykina as the situation unfolded.
In text messages shared with KING 5 by Zoya’s daughter, Anastasia, the two exchange messages earlier that morning.
In one message written in Russian, Zoya texts her daughter:
“I called,” Zoya wrote in Russian.
Moments later, she sends another message:
“Wait.”
Anastasia responds, urging her mother to contact police again.
“Call again… say my son is off his medication and he locked me out of my home,” she writes.
Minutes later, the texts turn into missed calls.
At 9:36 a.m., Anastasia sends a message:
“Hello.”
“Mom.”
Two minutes later, there is still no response.
Then, in another message sent to Zoya, Anastasia writes:
“Grandma said he killed u.”
The calls continue over the next several minutes — at 9:46, 9:47 and 9:50 a.m.
In a separate family text thread, Anastasia’s grandmother writes a message reflecting the uncertainty in those early moments:
“Maybe she’s still alive.”
Anastasia replies bluntly:
“I think he killed her.”
More missed calls follow — at 10:07 and 10:14 a.m.
Finally, at 11:02 a.m., Anastasia sends one last message to her mother.
“I love u.”
Authorities say four women were killed in the attack:
Zoya Shablykina, along with Joanne Brandani, 59, Louise Talley, 81, and Stephanie Killilea, 67.
The Pierce County Force Investigation Team is continuing to investigate the deputy-involved shooting.
Tacoma police, who are leading the investigation, are expected to provide additional updates later this week.
