It’s back.
If you get a text message about E-ZPass, it might be a good idea to ignore it. Because scams involving the toll service is starting to pop up again.
The scam involves people getting a text message that tells them they owe money on their account.
One message received today in New Jersey says “Ezpass Final Notice: Enforcement will begin on October 18th. Our records indicate that as of today, you still have an outstanding traffic ticket. Pursuant to New York Administrative Code 16C-16.003, if you fail to pay within 24 hours, we will take the following actions:
It then offers a link telling you to click for further details. You don’t want to click on the link.
It also says “Please settle your toll immediately after reading this message to avoid penalties for delaying the payment. Thank you for your cooperation.”
I you get a text message from a number saying it’s E-ZPass, do not click on the link. Often, the links will install malware on your computer. And certainly don’t send money.
If you have E-ZPass, the best thing to do is to contact them on their website, or to log in to your account.
These scams started popping up more than a year ago, and reports say some fell for it. If you receive a text, do not click on it and never send money.
