BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) – The state tax office is alerting the public to fraudulent text messages circulating in North Dakota by bad actors overseas.
The messages appear to come from the North Dakota Department of Revenue, which is not a real state office. The scammers ask for sensitive and confidential financial information. The Office of State Tax Commissioner will never request that kind of information via text message.
“Whenever someone receives what they think is a suspicious message, we want them to reach out to us, to double-check. Don’t click on any links. Don’t interact with the message in any way. Don’t try to put a stop or block it because then that tells the bad actor that this is an active number,” said State Tax Commissioner Brian Kroshus.
Kroshus said you would only receive a text message from the state tax office if you’ve signed up for a tax refund alert. The office has alerted the North Dakota Attorney General’s Office of the scam.
