Nelson police are warning residents about fraudulent text messages claiming to be from ICBC.
The messages say there is an outstanding traffic ticket and provide a link to payment, according to a statement released by the Nelson Police Department on Sept. 4.
ICBC doesn't request ticket payments in text messages. Police say the links are part of a scam meant to steal personal and financial information.
“We urge the public to be cautious and avoid clicking on any suspicious links,” said Inspector Jason Jewkes. “If you receive a message like this, do not respond or provide any personal information. Delete the message and report it."
To report a scam, contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca or Nelson police at 250-354-3919.
