Even though there have been reports about Samsung sunsetting its own Messages app, the company is still seemingly developing new features. A satellite-based texting feature has recently come to light. This suggesting users will be able to send and receive SMS over satellite. It’s unclear when the Korean firm will introduce this functionality. But it definitely shows Samsung has not given up on its Messages app.
While digging through the Samsung Messages APK (version 16.1.02.2), a Reddit user recently discovered a couple of strings related to satellite communication. It mentions satellite mode, likely a toggle within the app that allows users to activate satellite messaging. The string description reads “When in Satellite mode, Samsung Messages only supports sending and receiving text messages. RCS messaging is unavailable and multimedia files like pictures and videos can’t be attached.”

However, this version of Samsung Messages is not the most recent one, as newer versions like v16.1.10.13 exist, and these satellite-related strings were added as early as v15.5.31.9 in December 2024 (via Android Authority). Since then, no new strings have been added for Satellite mode support. This suggests that if Samsung is working on this feature, it may be doing so away from public view. But the lack of new evidence in recent versions means the feature might not be in active development.
Based on what the strings suggest, when you lose a traditional network, mainly in remote areas, you will be able to send and receive traditional SMS through Samsung Messages. Of course, you must have a supported device and a carrier plan that offers satellite service. Unfortunately, you will not be able to send multimedia files over satellite. Meanwhile, several carriers are launching their own satellite-to-mobile services, allowing their customers to stay connected even when cellular coverage is out of reach.
A few months ago, a report revealed that the app may get a few useful features from Google Messages soon. This includes birthday reminders, live location sharing, and emoji and sticker reactions.
