FRANKFORT, Ky. (WAVE) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is warning residents of a continued text message scam impersonating the agency featuring a link designed to look similar to the state government’s website.
The texts warn customers of unpaid traffic tickets and that a “DMV violation” will be reported and driving privileges will be suspended if the ticket is not paid immediately.
KYTC is taking the steps to have the fake website down, but reminds Kentuckians of tips to avoid giving sensitive information to scammers.
KYTC said that it does not collect traffic ticket fees via text messages, nor does it notify people in that way. The agency also does not refer to itself as KDOT or a DMV in official communications, so if you receive a text using those terms, it is not from them. Also, it reminds Kentuckians that the official website is drive.ky.gov and that scammers will attempt to mimic that address with subtle changes to trick people.
KYTC suggests that, if you receive a potential scam text, do not click the link and contact the agency directly to confirm authenticity before taking further action. If you have provided any payment information to a potential scam, KYTC recommends contacting your bank immediately.
You can also report these scam texts to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center, the Federal Trade Commission or the Kentucky Office of the Attorney General.
