Illinois DMV ‘final notice' text scam targeting drivers – NBC 5 Chicago

Did you recently get a text message claiming to be from the “Illinois State Department of Motor Vehicles?”
Be aware – such texts aren’t legitimate.
Stream NBC 5 for free, 24/7, wherever you are.
Texts threatening to suspend vehicle registration and driving privileges of residents are phishing attempts seeking to gain personal or financial data from Illinoisans, Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias’ office previously said.
The Algonquin Police Department in May posted an image of one such scam text, which stated vehicle registration and driving privileges will be suspended unless an “outstanding traffic ticket” is paid “immediately.”
“Illinois State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Final Notice: Enforcement Penalties Begin on May 28. Our records show that as of today, you still have an outstanding traffic ticket…” the text read, in part. “…Please pay immediately before enforcement to avoid license suspension and further legal disputes.”
State officials recommend you don’t click any links, which are typically included in such messages.

The Secretary of State’s Office said it only sends texts to remind individuals about their scheduled DMV appointments; text messages regarding driver’s license or vehicle registration status aren’t sent by the office.
Giannoulias has advised residents to stay vigilant and attentive with personal text messages and e-mails, and to report any fraudulent communication when seen.
