TOPICS:
The Washoe County Sheriff's Office has issued a warning about a resurgence of a fraudulent text message scam falsely claiming to be from the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
The scam message, labeled as a "Final Notice," threatens recipients with vehicle registration suspension, revoked driving privileges, and credit score damage if they do not respond.
The sheriff's office highlighted several red flags associated with the scam, including unsolicited texts or calls from a government entity, messages sent from international numbers, and suspicious web addresses such as ".cc" or ".icu" instead of the official ".gov" address. The fraudulent messages also lack personal details like the recipient's name, ticket number, or vehicle information and use urgent and threatening language.
Authorities advise recipients not to click on any links in the message, as they may be phishing attempts.
The Washoe County Sheriff's Office is urging the community to share this warning to help prevent others from falling victim to the scam. "Stay informed and protect your personal information," the sheriff's office said.
