Pennsylvania State Police are warning residents in Indiana County of a scam using texts posing as the Department of Motor Vehicles to target victims.
Residents contacted the Pennsylvania State Police after receiving text messages claiming to be from the DMV, stating, “Final Notice: Enforcement Penalties Begin on May 31.”
The message allegedly included a link for residents to make payments for an outstanding traffic ticket to avoid having their license suspended and other legal issues.
Troopers warn the message is a scam and are advising people not to click on any links in the message.
When you receive a message, it should be reported to the service provider as junk and deleted.
Police say they are not aware of anyone losing money to the scam in Indiana County.
“Scammers can be very savvy and we strongly advise residents to keep up to date on common scams and regularly discuss them with your family members and friends. We also recommend verifying the legitimacy of suspicious phone calls, emails, and text messages before providing any money or personal information or clicking on any embedded links,” Pennsylvania State Police said in a release.
