Get a text about unpaid E-ZPass tolls? Don't fall for this scam – NorthJersey.com

North Jersey agencies and individuals are warning residents to be aware of the latest text message scam alleging unpaid E-ZPass tolls.
Bergen County Consumer Affairs shared an example of the scam in a screenshot on Facebook Friday morning. The message, part of a group chat sent from a phone number with a non-local area code, states that the recipient has “an unpaid toll invoice” from December and seeks payment by Friday “to avoid excessive fines when the bill is due.”
The Consumer Affairs page identified the message as a scam, noting that the heart and hand emojis contained in the text would not be present in a legitimate E-ZPass message.
“The people who sent this are Phishing for your information. Do not click on the links,” the post read.
The Bloomfield Police Department shared a similar warning on Facebook Friday, urging the community to “think before you click.” E-ZPass and other “reputable” companies like Amazon, PSE&G and credit card providers would not sent a text message requesting payment or personal information, the department stated.
Other Facebook users provided screenshots of fraudulent messages stating they owe $6.99 to E-ZPass. The texts contained links to websites that are not the real E-ZPass site address, which for New Jersey customers is www.ezpassnj.com.
Anyone who clicked on a link or provided information through these text messages should secure their financial accounts. Contact your bank or credit card company to dispute any unfamiliar charges.
