If you’ve received a text message from a number you don’t know sending an innocent-looking message like, “Hi, who is this?” you might be the target of a scam.
It’s called the wrong number text scam.
Here are some examples of texts that 8 On Your Side consumer investigator Brian Roche has received:
These all seem to be innocent mistakes, but they’re probably not.
Wrong number texts like this could set you up for scams, identity theft or both.
If you respond, the scammer will try to start a conversation and attempt to befriend you.
When they feel like they’ve gained your trust, they ask you to invest in cryptocurrency, send them money or register for a dating website.
Some of these scams can even be carried out by chatbots.
If you reply, scammers will mark your number as active. This could lead to more calls or texts in the future.
Avoid the wrong number text scam by ignoring messages from strangers – no matter how harmless they may seem.
Block suspicious numbers.
Also, never give personal information to strangers such as your full name, address and banking information.
