If you receive an unsolicited text, email, or other message about outstanding toll fees, do not click any links included with it, the Department of Transportation warned this week.
“NH E-ZPass will never send text messages requesting payment for tolls with late fees,” DOT said. Residents have been targeted with fraudulent texts in what DOT called a “smishing scam” — an attempt to trick people into giving out their personal information through SMS or other messaging platforms.
The messages centered on “urgent requests with your account that would result in a late fee if the balance does not get settled,” according to DOT. Similar toll-related scams have taken place around the country in recent months, DOT said.
Customers can check their accounts safely through the E-ZPass website or app. They can file complaints about scam messages through the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center and alert their phone provider of scams by forwarding the messages to 7726 (SPAM).
